When students are tasked to write an essay, the topics are usually chosen for them already. Even if this is the case, students may still choose another topic related to the original one depending on the circumstances they are faced with.
Consider the purpose your essay is expected to produce. Are you expected to write an overview of the topic or a specific analysis of the matter at hand? Are you tasked to write your own stand of the issue? If the professor only tasks you to give an overview of what you have learned, then the general topic your professor has given you will do.
If you are, however, tasked to make a specific analysis or a position regarding a certain concept, then it is more advisable to choose a more specific subtopic. If you analyse a topic that is too broad, you will end up discussing every aspect related to it, leaving your readers confused. By steering your essay into a single direction, it will have more focus and impact to your readers.
